Carlton Moulton The major areas of concern are headsets and bottom brackets. Non-Raleigh British bikes use B. Raleigh used its own unique 26 threads-per-inch parts, which are not interchangeable with anything else. This is particularly a problem if you need to replace a fork on a Raleigh-built bike, because you will also have to replace the headset if you cannot locate a 26 TPI fork. Fortunately, the press-fit dimensions on the head tube of the frame are the same for both. If you are not satisfied with cottered cranks , and want to upgrade a Nottingham Raleigh frame to cotterless cranks, you will have to re-use the old cups unless you are prepared to spring for a Phil Wood bottom bracket, or a Velo Orange threadless bottom bracket — see article on cartridge bottom brackets.

The inner diameter of Raleigh cups is a bit smaller than standard. Because of the wider BB shells used on Raleighs, you will need a J. Alternatively, it is possible to re-thread Raleigh bottom brackets to standard British 24 TPI threading, but this will weaken the threads.

Replica made from the alleged Caprotti sketch. There are several early but unverified claims for the invention of the bicycle. The earliest comes from a sketch said to be from and attributed to Gian Giacomo Caprotti , a pupil of Leonardo da Vinci. In Hans-Erhard Lessing described this as a purposeful fraud. Augusto Marinoni, a lexicographer and philologist, who was entrusted by the Commissione Vinciana of Rome with the transcription of Leonardo’s Codex Atlanticus.

Drais invented his Laufmaschine German for “running machine” in , that was called Draisine English or draisienne French by the press. Karl von Drais patented this design in , which was the first commercially successful two-wheeled, steerable, human-propelled machine, commonly called a velocipede , and nicknamed hobby-horse or dandy horse. Hans-Erhard Lessing Drais’ biographer found from circumstantial evidence that Drais’ interest in finding an alternative to the horse was the starvation and death of horses caused by crop failure in , the Year Without a Summer following the volcanic eruption of Tambora in This design was welcomed by mechanically minded men daring to balance, and several thousand copies were built and used, primarily in Western Europe and in North America.

Its popularity rapidly faded when, partly due to increasing numbers of accidents, some city authorities began to prohibit its use. However, in Paris a Chinese visitor named Bin Chun could still observe foot-pushed velocipedes. The concept was picked up by a number of British cartwrights; the most notable was Denis Johnson of London announcing in late that he would sell an improved model. During the summer of , the “hobby-horse”, thanks in part to Johnson’s marketing skills and better patent protection, became the craze and fashion in London society.

The Hembrow Cycling Holidays blog has stories about cycle routes in Drenthe. We organize Study Tours to show off the best cycling infrastructure in the world. Nationaal Fietsmuseum Velorama, Nijmegen Fietsmuseum Velorama in Nijmegen, The Netherlands, is the largest cycling museum in the country where people cycle more than in any other. We visited the museum in August when a friend of ours in the Netherlands took us there to see their collection of bikes.

The photos will give a taste of what’s at the museum, but I recommend a visit.

Brakes Older Raleigh-made brakes used special cables with moulded ends on both ends of the cables, as shown. These cables are no longer available. They were supplied in different configurations for front, gent’s rear and lady’s rear applications. The cable came with the adjusting barrel. To replace the cable assembly, you would unbolt the adjusting barrel from the caliper. These cables can often be revived by dripping oil into them and working them back and forth.

They say nothing comes of nothing; but sometimes something can. In the time since Barney’s death, my little brother Richard, Barney’s father, has devoted his life to raising awareness of mental health problems in adolescents, travelling the country and the world telling schoolteachers and others closely-engaged with young people, the signs to watch for and the action they might take, so that, from Barney’s death, others might instead be helped, and live.

Tickets for this event sold out within two hours, but Twitter and livestreaming are, of course, availble, and I can’t urge enough anyone — parent, teacher, friend, family — engaged with adolescents to follow them. I’m currently working on my next novel which has taken off in a direction quite unexpected by me — a common experience to authors but the first time it’s happened to me to quite this extent.

The book is set in Berlin in the early Seventies where I lived young Army wife. I’m hoping that by the time it hits the Virago presses there’ll be no vestigial references to Rome where it was originally set during the rise of Mussolini when it was ditto. But it’s fun, intriguing, surprising and — for the readers as well as for me, I hope — quite immersive. Its themes are betrayal of all kinds and things that come in threes of all kinds. The novel is a story of fate, war, destiny, love, loss and the triumph of hope.

Four men — different backgrounds, different lives, different hopes, fears, and longings — are brought together at break of day on the 1st July, You can find how to buy it — or my other titles — on my Books page. For the occasion, and because family illness meant I couldn’t be there in person, I shot a brief video, talking about — and reading from — the book: I’m not sure whether it’s by accident or design, but the book is saturated in music:

This happened to me the other night. A dear friend and I were talking about our kids and how to help them transition from children to adults. The topic of dating and relationships came up and we started talking about my story. It somehow validates my belief that some of the teachings I grew up with were very wrong. Fear of loving and losing.

Fear of making the wrong choice.

The bicycle provided unprecedented individual mobility to the British working class. Servicing English 3-speeds. Triumph was a second-rank brand. Raleigh bought the bicycle rights to the name from the Triumph motorcycle company in There’s no connection to Triumph automobiles.

This city-wide festival was highlighted by a spectacular rolling chair parade down the famed Atlantic City Boardwalk. By , East Coast newspapers were looking for ways to increase their circulation. Newspaper organizations decided to sponsor photographic popularity contests from among their readership and awarded their respective winners with an all expense paid trip to the Second Annual Fall Frolic.

The pageant was a product of its times. The years from to were rich with expanding social, political and cultural activity for women. As America moved headlong from the Victorian to the modern age, a new image for women developed, symbolizing the changing times. According to leading magazines and periodicals of the time, the modern woman was vigorous.

She exercised and was encouraged to eat right. This was an unprecedented break from the rigorously controlled physicality prescribed for the ideal 19th century woman, with its emphasis on delicacy and fragility. The first pageant winner reflected these changes in attitude towards beauty. Margaret Gorman was girlish and wholesome-looking. It is in her type that the hope of the country resides.

In , the protestors won, and the pageant was discontinued as commercial supporters withdrew in response to accusations that the pageant lacked decorum.
